Before we get into the recipes, let’s first talk about how you can make popsicles at home.
If you’ve never made popsicles before, it can seem a little scary at first. But don’t worry they’re actually pretty easy to make! You do need a few tools to get started, but you can buy them for pretty cheap on Amazon, at HomeGoods, or other retail shops.
Popsicle Molds
This is the most important thing you’ll need to make popsicles.
There are a lot of different types of popsicle molds available online. I prefer silicone molds because it’s easy to pour the mixture in, easy to clean, and the popsicles come out easily without breaking.
You also want to make sure that the popsicle molds contain some kind of stick or handle for easy removal, and to make it easy for kids to grab and eat their treats.
Here are some toddler-friendly version that are under $20 and have amazing reviews on Amazon.

Blender or Food Processor
To make your yogurt popsicles smooth and creamy, you’ll want to blend the ingredients first. This is especially important for little toddlers so that they don’t accidentally eat large chunks of fruit that could become a choking hazard!
I love using my Nutribullet to make smoothies, but you could use whichever blender you have at home. You can even use a food processor!

Are Yogurt Popsicles Healthy?

Popsicles? Healthy?! YES – these homemade yogurt popsicles actually contain a good amount of nutrients! Most of them contain yogurt, fruits, and some even contain veggies.
Here’s some of the good stuff you can find in these yogurt popsicles:
- Calcium + Vitamin D – Yogurt is a great source of calcium and vitamin D for kids. Both of these are essential for strong bones and teeth.
- Protein – Yogurt is also a good source of protein. You can also swap out regular plain yogurt for Greek yogurt for even more protein!
- Vitamin C – Adding real fruit into the popsicles gives it a healthy dose of vitamin C which is important for your child’s immune system. Plus, it’s a great way to naturally sweeten the popsicles! Just make sure there aren’t any big pieces or chunks in the popsicles before serving
- Fiber – Some fruits contain a lot of fiber, especially strawberries and blueberries
How to Make Yogurt Popsicles Creamy
Popsicles come in two broad categories – fruity or creamy. I personally love making creamy popsicles using yogurt because they taste almost like ice cream!
- Use whole milk yogurt for a richer, creamier result. Low-fat or fat-free yogurt can lead to popsicles that taste watery and icy
- Look for popsicle recipes that use banana, avocado, or coconut milk – these are natural ways to make popsicles more creamy
- Blend the mixture well to avoid icy fruit chunks that may be choking hazards for kids and toddlers
- Avoid over-freezing. Let the popsicles thaw for 3–5 minutes before serving to little ones
Using Greek Yogurt to Make Yogurt Popsicles
If you want to add more protein to these yogurt popsicles, you could use Greek yogurt instead of plain yogurt. Just note that the popsicles may taste a little more tangy and the mixture may be a little thicker. You can use water to thin out the mixture before before pouring them into the molds.
I’ve included some recipes in this roundup which use Greek yogurt, so look out for those!
A few tips if you do choose to use Greek yogurt:
- Choose full-fat Greek yogurt. It’s thicker and more satisfying than non-fat versions
- Thin it slightly by blending it with a small splash of milk or water
- Sweeten naturally – Greek yogurt can be a bit tangy, so add banana, a drizzle of maple syrup, or a dash of vanilla to balance the flavor
- Blend smooth – A high-powered blender can help you achieve a creamy texture when working with Greek yogurt
How to Store Yogurt Popsicles

Once your yogurt popsicles are fully frozen, it’s important to store them properly so they stay fresh and don’t get any of that yucky freezer burn.
The best way to store these popsicles is to use parchment paper and a deep airtight freezer container. You could use zip-top freezer bags, but I don’t think this is as sturdy as a container.
I recommend stacking the popsicles in your container with a piece of parchment paper in between each layer to prevent the yogurt popsicles from sticking together. I also recommend labeling the container with the date the popsicles were made.
These yogurt popsicles do best when they’re eaten within 2-3 months, otherwise they may start to lose some of their texture and taste. I’ve kept popsicles in the freezer for longer, but they start tasting icy and lose their flavor.
