How to Make Blended, Drinkable Soups
For making creamy blended soups, you will need an immersion blender. I got mine for about $20 from Amazon, and so far it’s been a great investment! I’ve also used it for blending roasted veggies for homemade pasta sauces and I’ve even used it to whip up mashed potatoes for Thanksgiving.
This is the immersion blender that I bought from Amazon. As I mentioned above, I got it on sale for under $20 and it works like a dream. It’s easy to store and doesn’t take up a lot of space in my kitchen cabinets.
If you aren’t able to buy an immersion blender, you can still use a regular stand blender but you have to be careful and follow specific instructions. This article explains how to safely blend soup in a blender.
I made the mistake of trying to blend a batch of hot soup into my Nutribullet last year, and it was a giant mess. It was near impossible to open the lid and when I did pry it loose, the liquid exploded everywhere! Kinda dangerous, but thankfully nobody got hurt!

Tips for Packing Soup for Travel
Before diving into the recipes, here are some quick tips if you plan on drinking these soups in the car or taking it on a road trip.
- Cool it slightly before packing – let the hot soup rest on the counter for about 10–15 minutes before packing it so that steam doesn’t pop the lid
- Don’t overfill the container – leave about 1–2 inches of space at the top of the container to prevent spills
- Use a leak-proof container – a travel soup container with a locking, vented lid is your best friend here! The soup stays warm with less chances of a spill. I put a few of my favorite travel soup containers below.
- Use a thermos or flask – a travel soup flask or thermos keeps soup hot for hours and reduces spill risk. It’s my favorite for drinking soup in the car!
- Wrap it up – place the container in a dish towel or reusable bag to catch any drips and provide insulation
- Keep it upright – make sure to transport your soup in a sturdy container so it stays upright. An insulated lunch bag or even some kind of box will do the trick here
- Avoid glass containers if traveling far – while glass containers are my favorite for storing leftovers, they can break easily. If you’re going on a longer road trip or packing your soup for long-distance travel, then stick to stainless steel or sturdy plastic containers
- Pack in portions – instead of one large container, divide soup into smaller travel soup containers—it’s easier to transport and less risky if one spills
- Add a spoon on the side – while these soups are drinkable, I recommend packing a spoon or two just in case!
- Bring extra napkins – bring way more than you think you need, in case of a spill!
